Fears Syria's uranium stockpiles going to Iran
The Financial Times reports nuclear experts are raising concerns about the safety of up to 50 tonnes of unenriched uranium in Syria where an increasingly violent and chaotic civil war could put the stockpile at risk.
The uranium – believed to be of high quality – stems from a project to build a nuclear facility with the help of North Korea at Al-Kibar.
Intelligence agencies believed that the reactor was close to completion, but the site was destroyed by Israeli warplanes in September 2007:
"An IAEA inspection team visited the destroyed Al-Kibar site in May 2008 and only found traces of uranium. This merely added to the mystery of where the 50 tonnes of uranium, if it exists, might be. Such a stockpile would be enough, according to experts, to provide weapons grade fuel for five atomic devices.
"Some government officials have raised concerns that Iran, which is closely allied to the Syrian regime and urgently needs uranium for its nuclear programme, might be trying to seize such a stockpile.
"These officials’ fears have been triggered by signs of movement at what they allege is a secret uranium conversion facility that the Syrian regime built at the town of Marj al-Sultan near Damascus."

Exploitation of mineral resources is essential for the sustainable development of the country. We have many natural resources ,like gas, coal ,glass sand, limestone ,clay, silica ,and beach sand Minerals, others ,It is vital role play for the economic development of the country..Mineral sand deposit along the coastal belt of Bangladesh ,constitute  a potential resources of the country.The beach sand minerals contains Rutile, ,which approximately 95%0f titanium dioxide, extensively used in pigment industries, welding electrodes industries,  now it is very  demand in the industries, and many consumers in the domestic & international market ,Zircon,   its chemical composition ,zirconium silicate ,very much demand in the markets ,it used in the ceramic industries, steel  mill ,refractory,&foundries,
Applied in t.v plate it is now very demand in our country .Magnetite, as a iron ores  used in ferrite rods, red oxide and black oxide. ,and Ilemenit e,also contains titanium dioxide  it is used in the for the shielding of radiation ,and extensively used in the shielding block of nuclear power plant ,   Garnet, monazite ,rare earth radioactive minerals ,which contains thorium which used in nuclear technology ,garnet is used in emery cloth, papers and grinding stone, also in jewels in watches. Kyanite, as a sources of aluminium,& Leucoxene, as a substitute of rutile, Beach sand containing potentially valuable minerals were discovered in 1961 during a geological survey for radioactive minerals in cox;sbazar beach area .Atomic energy commission have been engaged for its exploration & exploitation of these minerals ,according to baec  data there is 4.4 million tons of heavy minerals on 17 nos deposits area so far . on which potential economic minerals is 1.76 million tons ,and its estimate zircon 1.58,117 tons,Rutile reserve 71thousand tons ,Ilmenite,1,025,558 tons Magnetite,81thousand tons ,
Garnet ,222,761,tons,Monazite 17,352,tons , Recently beach sand minerals being consumed and demand  rolling mill in Bangladesh ,sanitary ware factory ,papers mill ,match factory ,and now demand many factories  it is also possible potential for nuclear power plant projects . .BAEC requested the govt of Australia  to help so they extended assistances under Colombo plan to  study feasibility of the economical ,so pilot plant were build at cox;sbazar in the year 1975.they supplied all equipment ,this worked done by one Australian consultant firm, MDL, Mr Macdonald yrs 1976,. Mr Macdonald has submitted & recommended added some additional equipment for the plant  one report for preliminary feasibility of the projects Then afterwards another consultant of Australia firm an Australian Minerals Development laboratory (,AMDEL)also study with bulk sample for the feasibility in the year 1977, they also has submitted one report in the meantime pilot plant has successfully Physical separated in commercial grade type minerals ilemenite ,Magnetite, garnet, zircon and rutile through zircon & Rutile is not yet in target grade ..anyhow in the years 1994-1998 one BMRE project has been undertaken ,some new equipment has been procured and installed at the pilot plant projects .pilot plant studies only develop flow sheets for physical separation of constituent economic minerals and to find out working economic involved therein which would in turn be in commercial plant  to be set up in future .There is many commercial projects  recovery of these kind of minerals in Australia ,south Africa, brazil, India,  sri lanka ,Malaysian ,china,& many countries of the world,  so what is problem of our country ? But in the yrs 1985 Japan aid organization wiliness to grant this project,  next  Australian Titanium resources , has agreed to finances this projects in the 1990, but it was not in materialized for some our  bureaucratic system     Through it  is small deposit to compare to other countries of the world , we have undertaken imitative works to find out additional reserve and what is news of  existing reserve present position  ?The reserve situation must be resolved ,as it is prior commitment ,ores reserve estimation must be on adequate data, and cost estimation ,as our country has no expert in the field of beach sand mining project , so again I have put some suggestion 1, An investigation must be determine economically viable2, .Entire evaluation data of exploration ? 3, Pilot plant operation must be accuracy data of quality of recovery %,it processing parameter ,so that is production must be market grade,4, The existing deposit area should be environmental impact analysis, with most modern equipment ,6 , the pilot plant has designed for the small scale production for beach sand mining industries ,I think it require additional production of Ilemenite ,/Magnitite ,zircon ,rutile ,garnet ,monazite, and chalked out  plan  for the ,rechecking existing reserve ,weather it is commercial feasible  ? it is must be take  steps for the  right decisions , it is long time ago ,no further delayed, but  for the nuclear power generation  in Bangladesh ,then it should be too essential for production of above minerals ,ensure the shielding  of radiation works of the nuclear  plant . of our country . save some foreign exchanges ..

Teen Sexting Linked to More Sexual Activity

Teens Not Using Sexting to Delay Having Sex, as Some Have Suggested

Sept. 17, 2012 -- "Sexting,'' the sending or receiving of sexually explicit messages or photos by cell phone, isn't an alternative to teens' sexual activity, but is actually linked to it, according to a new study.
"Sexting is part of the new landscape of the sex lives of teens," says researcher Eric Rice, PhD, assistant professor of social work at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
While some experts have suggested that sexting is an alternative to having sex for teens, this research suggests otherwise.
Teens who sexted were more likely to be sexually active, and some were more likely to engage in risky sex. He found that 15% of teens who had access to a cell phone had sexted, and 54% reported knowing someone who had sent a sext.
Rice says sexting should be addressed in sex education classes. The topic might also help parents open a conversation about sex with their teens, he says.
The study is published in Pediatrics.

Sexting & Sexual Behaviors: Details

Rice looked at data from more than 1,800 Los Angeles high school students. Most students were 14 to 17 years old.
They answered questions about their own sexting practices and those of their friends.
They reported on their sexual activity and safe sex practices.
Nearly 87% of the students described themselves as heterosexual. The others reported being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or unsure of their orientation.
Those who had friends who sexted were much more likely to sext themselves, about 17 times more likely, Rice found.
And, "teens who sext are seven times more likely to be sexually active," he says.
Rice found differences between straight teens and other teens. Those who reported being non-heterosexual were nearly three times as likely to report sexting. They were 1.5 times more likely to report sexual activity and nearly two times as likely to have unprotected sex at their last encounter.
He cannot explain the differences, but speculates that the Internet may be an easier way to connect for non-heterosexual teens, who may fear stigma otherwise.
Most of the teens were Latino or Hispanic, while about a fifth were white or African-American. "I think we can say confidently, 'This is a good picture of urban youth,'" Rice says. "[But] this might not necessarily translate to rural youth."

Sexting & Sexual Activity: Perspective

The study results echo some of those found by Jeff R. Temple, PhD. Earlier this year, his study found that more than 1 in 4 teens have sent nude photos of themselves through text or email.
He also found that those who had sent a naked photo were more likely to be sexually active.
"We found sexting to be an extension of offline lives," he says. "It's a representation of what they are doing in their actual lives."
The finding about gay, lesbian, and transgender teens warrants more study, he says.
Meanwhile, parents might use the research as a way to start conversations about sex with their teens, Temple says.
"Use this as an opportunity to talk to kids about safe sex and actual sexual behavior," he says.
It can be as simple, Temple says, as mentioning the research in the news, then asking a teen:
  • "What do you think about this study?"
  • "What would you do if someone sent you a naked picture?"
